5 signs your switchboard is ready to go

Not sure if you need an upgrade? Here are the most common signs our Brisbane customers call us about:

1. Ceramic or porcelain fuses

Your home's wiring protection hasn't been updated in decades. These fuses don't trip fast enough to prevent fires.

2. Safety switch keeps tripping

An overloaded or undersized board struggles with modern appliances. Frequent trips are a warning sign.

3. You want an EV charger installation

EV chargers draw 7–22kW. Most older boards can't handle this load safely without an upgrade first.

4. Adding ducted air conditioning

Ducted AC adds significant ongoing load. A new board ensures safe, reliable power distribution.

5. Your home was built before 1990

Switchboards from this time were not made for the number of appliances used in homes today.

Common questions about switchboard upgrades

Q1. Is a switchboard upgrade required by law in Queensland?

There's no law that says you must upgrade just because your board is old. But if you're renovating, adding circuits, or installing an EV charger, any new electrical work must meet current standards - which often means upgrading the board at the same time. If your board has ceramic fuses, a licensed electrician will recommend replacement as part of any major electrical job.

Q2. How long do switchboard upgrades in brisbane take?

Most switchboard upgrades take 3–5 hours for a standard home. We aim to complete the job in a single visit. Your power will be off for most of this time, so we recommend booking a morning slot.

Q3. Can I stay home during the upgrade?

Yes. You don't need to leave. Your power will be off for the duration of the job, but you can stay on the property. We'll let you know the expected timeframe when we arrive

Q4. What is the difference between a safety switch and a circuit breaker?

A circuit breaker protects your wiring from overload or short circuit. A safety switch (RCD) protects people from electric shock by cutting power in milliseconds if it detects a fault. Queensland law requires safety switches on all power and lighting circuits. A new switchboard includes both.
